The APRHF plans to eventually open a museum close to the historic Santa Fe Depot and La Plata Amtrak Station.
At that location it will have access to an existing railroad siding and have room to build a railroad yard to
place a significant amount of heritage passenger railroad equipment on display.
But, rather than wait until an existing building is acquired or built from scratch, the APRHF already owns
the 8,000 square foot Silver Rails Event Center in Downtown La Plata which can temporarily be converted to
house an initial museum.
The APRHF Silver Rails Event center could easily accommodate displays along the interior walls while preserving
enough open space in the central area of the building to continue to be used for events.
This would only be a temporary location of the initial museum as a location closer to the Amtrak Station,
access to the railroad siding, and space for a rail yard is much more desirable.
But transformation of the event center for dual use as a museum would give us a chance to expand our exhibit
space and open to the public sooner.
The timing of the transformation of the APRHF Silver Rails Event Center into dual use of also being the initial
museum is going to depend on donation of funds, donation of artifacts, and volunteers.
